Omega Psi Phi Convention In The Capital City
Omega Psi Phi Conclave to Have $35 Million Economic Impact on Little Rock
The Clinton Museum Store has gone to the Ques, the Omega Psi Phi Que's to be exact. They're in town to celebrate the fraternity's 74th Conclave.
Connie Fails, manager of the store, says she's stacked it with purple and gold. “We're very excited. We started months ago planning merchandise and sort of what would our event be here at the store that would welcome the Omegas to Little Rock."
The Little Rock Convention and Visitor's Bureau estimates more than 10,000 Omegas and their families will attend, bringing in up to $35 million for central Arkansas' economy.
Bureau CEO Dan O’Byrne says, “There was a lot of people who said we couldn't do a convention of this size, mostly our competitors. There are more than a few surprised cities across the United States that the Omega Psi Phi 74th Conclave is coming to Little Rock."
The fraternity's leader says he wanted to come to here. Grand Basileus George H. Grace says, “The smaller cities are much more personable and you get to meet a lot of corporate heads that can help you out with your community projects."
After several visits here and speaking with city officials and residents, Grace says he was sold. But what finally sealed the deal was a personal videotape from President Clinton himself.
Grace continues, “That went over well with everyone, I know especially with me. I always considered him one of the greatest presidents this country has ever had."
While here, the group will have job and health fairs scheduled, a youth leadership conference and a nationally syndicated radio program --the Tom Joyner Morning Show.
Grace says, “When I talked about coming to Little Rock, people's eyebrows raised. What are you going to do that for? I tend to think that in America, especially for African American groups, I think we need to start patronizing smaller markets."

Feed the Children partnered up with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Florida Senator, Tony Hill.
Helping to ease the struggle, Feed the Children delivers shipments of food around the world to millions of families. Today, their destination was Little Rock, Arkansas.
A line of more than 400 cars flooded the parking lot of Saint Mark Baptist Church.
Each family received a 25 pound box of food, and personal care items. It may not sound like a lot, but for many families struggling at times to make ends meat, every little bit helps.
"We're just here to show love to this community. Humanitarian and we just feel like it's the right thing to do from our fraternity," says Tony Hill. more >>
